Empowered Through Counseling

Many people suffered during the Rana Plaza accident and many families were broken, their dreams were shattered. The physical injuries and losses were reported everywhere. But the amount of mental trauma, agony and pain the victims suffered through this incident was not noticed or reported anywhere. This incident haunted these victims in their dreams and shattered their confidence.
Such a person was Mrs. A (pseudo name), who worked in Rana Plaza. While the building collapsed she was inside it. She was confined in the building in one position for a whole day. The ceiling of the floor above her collapsed in front of her and bunch of people fell over her as she was lying there. She couldn’t move at all due to excessive pain in her muscles and confinement of space. A pregnant lady also fell during the collapse of the floor and she had to deliver her baby in that dreadful position. As she was constantly asking for people to help her baby to get rescued, Mrs. A just lay there and could not do anything as she was unable to move and her whole body was in pain.
The guilt of not being able to help the girl and her baby haunted Mrs. A every night. She started having nightmares about it. The guilt shattered her confidence. Her family members and neighbors started to call her “mental”. She suffered from low self esteem and severe anger outburst when people called her names. With no psychological support from the family and neighbors, she started having different physical problems like high blood pressure. She was in desperate need of some psychological support.
Change after getting counseling session: After getting 4 counseling sessions from the Center for Psychosocial Wellbeing Mrs. A got her confidence back as she got highly appreciated for focusing on her strengths. She got new sources of working as she overcame her fear of facing buildings and people around her. She could manage her anger effectively and reported to feel less physical pain (headache, pain in joint of body) as she didn’t hold on to her anger anymore. She is now enjoying her activities in another garments factory.
