Play Summit 2018

BRAC, in collaboration with ANJI Play China, and supporting partner Tung Wah College, will
host the first Play Summit. The purpose of the Summit is to create a space to share and discuss
the role of play in the formative stages of a child’s life and develop a way-forward to replicate
and scale resource optimized play models in the Asian and African regions.
Through the summit, it is hoped to create a platform that showcases not only play as a tool for
early years’ learning, but as a space for resource constraint countries to share and discuss
innovative approaches of availing play-based education in fragile settings through low-cost
models; discussion on optimal design of spaces and services for children, including play
material workshops, and the linking of the works of diverse stakeholders for the advancement of
ECD and play-based learning. Thus, the main theme of the summit will centre on optimization of
resources for Early Childhood Development (ECD) through play, in fragile and low resource
The Play Summit presents an opportunity to build on our cultural commonalities as a means of
finding replicable initiatives that have been successfully implemented in our respective national
contexts. Experiences from our partners and guests can foster effective steps in designing
culturally appropriate play spaces which identify the indigenous heritage of the local community
through space design, creation of culturally identifiable play materials, etc. The Summit will offer
guests to share their experiences in embracing play as well as new & cost-effective models of
play, such as outdoor kindergartens in Hong Kong, which leverage the natural environment for
learning. It will further be a reflection of BRAC’s own expertise, including spatial optimization for
slum settings in Bangladesh, low-cost play material creation and employing contextualized play
curriculum in fragile settings.
